Current Trends for Hiring in the Mission Critical Industry
What are the most in-demand jobs in the mission critical industry right now, and why?
“So, in the mission critical industry right now, I do a lot of work in the construction area, specifically focused on finding Site Superintendents, MEP Project Managers, and Technicians. Another hot job right now is an Energy Marshall. A lot of Electrical Engineers, very specific to power and the infrastructure within a data center, and all things mission critical. There are a lot of roles that are pretty hot right now. Another one I would say in the mission critical space that we’ve been seeing is a Service Delivery person—someone being able to be client-facing, but also very technical. It’s a pretty hot role right now in the market.” — Kyle Walker, Recruiting Manager
Kyle highlights several in-demand roles he has seen while hiring in the mission critical industry, including Site Superintendents, MEP Project Managers, Technicians, and Energy Marshalls. The rise of data centers and power infrastructure has also increased the need for specialized Electrical Engineers. Additionally, Service Delivery roles are becoming essential, requiring candidates who can combine technical expertise with client-facing skills. These roles reflect the growing complexity of the industry, where both operational efficiency and customer interaction are paramount.
Challenges in Hiring and Retaining Talent for Mission Critical Roles
What challenges do companies in this industry face when trying to hire and keep skilled workers?
“I would say right now in the market, it is growing rapidly within the Mission Critical industry. There are projects going all around and specifically where I'm located here in Phoenix, it’s one of the hottest markets. A challenge that clients face right now is finding people who aren't just focused on increasing their pay—those who want to jump from one project to the next. What clients really need is someone who can stay consistent, build within the company, and grow alongside it. There’s a lot of upward growth potential with many of the clients we partner with. Candidates want to see a clear vision for their future within the company.” — Kyle Walker, Recruiting Manager
The mission critical industry is experiencing rapid growth, especially in hotspots like Phoenix, but this expansion brings hiring challenges. Kyle notes that hiring in mission critical is complicated by candidates who prioritize higher pay and quick transitions between projects. To overcome this, companies must foster consistency by showing candidates a clear career path with opportunities for upward growth. When candidates see a long-term future within the company, they are more likely to stay and contribute to its success.
Strategies for Overcoming Recruitment Challenges in the Mission Critical Industry
What are the best ways to attract and retain talent for mission-critical roles?
“Yeah, I would say right now, some of the best ways is by going into the market and finding candidates that are passive—those who are growing and maybe even a little more junior than needed. You want someone who is hungry, teachable, and able to grow within the organization. It's hard for companies to just wait for an A-player to apply to a job posting. They need a partnership with an executive search firm that can develop a strategy, game plan, and action steps to find and onboard great talent. I personally find a lot of joy in partnering with clients, helping them identify what they need, and finding the right candidates that are a perfect match for their company.” — Kyle Walker, Recruiting Manager
Kyle emphasizes that attracting top talent in the mission critical industry requires a proactive approach. Companies should seek out passive candidates who may be more junior but are eager to learn and grow. Rather than waiting for ideal candidates to apply, Kyle encourages companies to partner with executive search firms like Blue Signal. Through this partnership, firms can develop tailored hiring strategies to identify, attract, and onboard the right candidates.
